🦠Why Are COVID Cases Rising in India?

Good morning. It's the International Fact-Checking Day tomorrow and we are conducting a hands-on online verification workshop for news desks.
🔖 This week of International Center for Journalists' (ICFJ) Empowering The Truth Summit in partnership with BOOM, saw journalist and co-founder of Splice Media Rishad Patel sharing design basics for journalists to spread facts.
👉 Here is a TL;DR of what happened during the session.
What is a bad design?—It's anything that gets in the way of solving your user's problem.
Good design is like brushing your teeth. It's quick, hygienic, regular— prevents tooth decay, Alzheimer's and heart disease.
We've spent so many years designing for an emotional response. It's time to design for trust.
But seriously— It's a plague out there. And if fact-checking and verification is the vaccine, design is the daily hygiene.
If you are a journalist or a media professional, you need to be obsessed with these 5 questions:
Who needs this information?
Why do they need it?
In what format do they need it?
What can they do with it?
How do I know this is true?
✅ Misinformation This Week

🦠 What Is XBB1.16, The New Covid Strain Behind Rise In Cases?
🔖 India has seen a sharp rise in COVID cases in March. Last week, India saw a gradual increase in active cases with 6,559 cases on 20 March, 7,026 cases on 22 March, 8,601 on 25 March and finally 10,300 active cases on 27 March.
According to the experts, the rise in cases can be attributed to a new strain of COVID, known as the XBB1.16.
BOOM's Hera Rizwan spoke to them to know more about the latest strain of COVID.
#️⃣ Madhu & Mansi - The Mother-Daughter Bouncer Duo
🔖 This mother-daughter duo is working as women bouncers in Delhi. Madhu and her daughter, Mansi have been in this profession for 10 years and 5 years respectively. Working in this field helped Madhu achieve her goals, alongside boosting her confidence.
🔖 Several posts on social media, stating that all transactions done through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) platform would attract a 1.1% fee, are misleading. The 1.1% interchange will only be charged to the UPI transactions made through PPIs like wallets.
BOOM's Mohammed Kudrati tells you how they are misleading in this fact-check.
🔖 Meanwhile, an image showing a room with the flags representing the Pride movement, Democratic Socialists of America and the North Atlantic Fellas Organisation (NAFO), went viral on the internet with the claim that it shows the room of the Nashville shooter Audrey Hale (later changed to Aiden Hale).
BOOM's Archis Chowdhury debunks this claim.
