Browser View | March 11, 2023 | Subscribe
Good morning. Did you know what comes after April Fool’s Day?🤔
Its the International Fact-Checking Day, and I’m going to host a Free hands-on online verification workshop for news desks. I will take you through the basics of fact-checking including verification of images, videos and text before reporting them. This and a lot more in the one-hour workshop specially curated for news desks.
🔖 While it's important to know how to fact-check and debunk misinformation, it's also equally important to know how to amplify facts.
The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in partnership with BOOM has been conducting several online workshops on every Thursday in March with some more lined up for the rest of the month, to make the truth go viral.
And one of the ways to amplify facts is: The Video Way!
This Thursday, journalists Manon Verchot and Sanshey Biswas (co-founders of In Old News) demonstrated how snackable videos on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube can be made in a fun, interactive way for people to consume facts in a not-so-boring manner.
Read this detailed Twitter thread to know about all the engaging video formats that were discussed during the session.
We just wrapped our session on Mobile Video for Truth Telling, which is a part of the Empowering The Truth Summit by @ICFJ@ScrippsHowardFd and @boomlive_in

☣️ Corruption, Violations: Why Is Kochi Choking On Toxic Smog?
🔖 Thirty fire units, each spraying 40,000 litres of water, 120 firefighters, two navy helicopters, two floating bulldozers, a couple of other bulldozers, two large de-watering pumps, and dozens of small water pumps, had doused the five-day-long fire at 110-acre Brahmapuram waste dumping site in Kochi, Kerala recently.
Talking to BOOM, Dr. Padmanabha Shenoy, an immunologist, said: "As Kochi is a seaside city, the smoke will dissipate soon. However, this PM2.5 will remain in the atmosphere for several days, if not weeks. We shouldn't take off our masks for at least a couple of weeks."
But, what is the reason for the fire? Read this explainer by Rejimon Kuttappan to know more.
🗵 The Fake WhatsApp Videos That Made Bihar’s Workers Escape Tamil Nadu
🔖 Thousands of migrant workers from Bihar have left Tamil Nadu because of the fear raised by viral false videos. What were these rumours and who started them?
High school dropout Bikku, who hails from Jamui district of Bihar, had been working in Tamil Nadu for around two years. He told BOOM he had never faced any discrimination or threat there. But the murder of his villager Pawan Yadav followed by a flurry of videos that were forwarded to him on WhatsApp groups left him so panicked that he took the first train out of Tamil Nadu, without a ticket.
Read this detailed report by Umesh Kumar Ray.
⚠️ Got A Strange Text From HDFC Bank? This Is How The Phishing Scam Works
🔖 Meanwhile, Kartik Bhat, a resident of Shivneri Nath Pai Nagar in Mumbai was browsing his phone on 26 February when he received an SMS claiming to be from HDFC bank. The message said his account would be suspended if he didn't update his KYC information using a link provided in the message.
Have you also received such a message? Read this article by BOOM's Kaisar Andrabi to know how the HDFC bank phishing scam works and what the officials are doing about it.
🔖 News wire agency Indo Asian News Service (IANS) misreported the killing of a Dalit man in Hyderabad by relatives of the woman he was in a relationship with, as an inter-faith honour killing.
Multiple media outlets made the same false claim based on the IANS story. Read this fact-check by Srijit Das and Runjay Kumar to know the facts of the matter.
🔖 An image of economist and former Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan was shared with a text, purportedly as a quote from him, which says, "People (in India) should start saving money, the situation will become like that of Sri Lanka".
So, did he say this? Find out in this fact-check by Archis Chowdhury.
🅱️ Recommends
📖 This week's recommendation is: The Problems of Evolution as a “March of Progress” by Alexander Werth.
As we have seen, lack of knowledge about biological phenomena that surround us leave us vulnerable to disinformation that can lead to health risks not just for us, but for others as well. In this essay, the author clears some of the many misconceptions that plague the oft discussed topic of ‘evolution’ and highlights how our ingrained biases are responsible for them in the first place.
