Good morning. How have you been tackling medical misinformation? Usually, people think misinformation/ false claims aren't always relatable. But, what happens when it comes to your health?

👋 I’m Divya. Lets begin.

🔖 In the previous edition, I touched upon medical misinformation or health misinformation.

Well, while it goes without saying that one shouldn't blindly trust any random recommendations on cures, medicines, etc that you see on social media, yet people tend to believe some of these unproven cures.

No, I am not blaming them. There are reasons why they tend to believe. Misinformation often plays on our emotions. The messaging is such that it plays on our fears. Sometimes, the messages on health remedies are falsely attributed to doctors.

👉 For instance, in 2020, a viral WhatsApp forward falsely claimed that well known cardiac surgeon Dr Devi Shetty had advised people not to get tested for coronavirus till the ninth day of showing symptoms.

Not only was it circulated on WhatsApp, Facebook but even a Bengali media outlet fell for the viral audio clip.

This is just one of the multiple false and misleading claims that BOOM had debunked about coronavirus.

What do you do in such cases?

  • Don't blindly believe forwards. Question the source.

  • Verify with your family doctor.

  • Look for health advisories released by WHO, government officials, hospitals, etc

  • Look for online fact-checks by doing a Google search on the viral message.

  • Send it to BOOM's WhatsApp Tipline Number so that we can ✅ verify it for you: 7700906588

🅱️ Recommends

📖 This week's recommendation is: Greater Internet use is not associated with faster growth in Political Polarisation among US demographic groups by Levi Boxell, Matthew Gentzkow and Jesse M. Shapiro.

Usage/access to the internet in general and social media in particular has been hailed in literature to be the determining factor for rise in polarisation among masses. This paper delves deeper into analysing the manifestations of polarisation, by using eight measures for it to come to a startling conclusion—social media/internet cannot be a determining factor as the age-group exhibiting most polarisation is also with least usage of the internet (65+ aged population).
