๐Ÿ”– Hours after a Yeti Airlines plane crashed in Nepal's tourist town of Pokhara on 15 January, a video shot by an Indian passenger on board went viral showing the terrifying final moments of the flight leading up to the crash.

BOOM's Anmol Alphonso verified the video and found that it was shot by Sonu Jaiswal, one of the five Indian passengers on board, and that it was live streamed from Jaiswal's Facebook account.

I spoke to Anmol to know more about the challenges he faced while verifying the viral footage.

What were the challenges you faced?According to Anmol, following were the challenges faced while verifying the video:

  • The major challenge that we initially faced was to verify which Facebook account of the deceased passenger - Sonu Jaiswal, was used.

  • As he had a name that is common in India, especially in the north, we had to look more for the Facebook account.

  • We then figured out that Jaiswal had two Facebook accounts, one active - which went live during the flight and another one that is old and was not in use lately.

  • After getting the cue that the Facebook display picture seen in a viral video matched with Jaiswal's Facebook account dp, we were able to establish that it was indeed Jaiwal's account.

Collaborations are always a plus!

"One important point that I would like to mention is that journalistic collaboration really helps. Nepal Fact Check editor Salokya had reached out to me on that day regarding whether we were able to trace the Indian Facebook account. We shared our findings and Nepal Fact Check shared theirs with us. For instance, they had accessed the foreign traveler list that had Sonu Jasiwal's name mentioned in it, and also they had spoken to a travel agent who arranges things for Indian passengers in Nepal. He confirmed to them that Sonu's account had gone live that day," Anmol said.

"I think this is a good example to follow while working on such stories where international fact-checkers can share their findings with each other," he added.

Heard That Viral Vanshika's Breakup Call? It Was A Myntra Ad Campaign

๐Ÿ”– In the first week of December 2022, a post-breakup conversation between a girl called Vanshika and her friend was apparently leaked online. In the recording, Vanshika cries to her friend after her boyfriend Akaash breaks up with her just before their 'two-month relationship anniversary'.

She says that all her efforts at waxing, threading, and even learning about football went in vain. And then she says that she regrets not waiting for the Myntra sale to buy the expensive shoes.

It instantly went viral. However, it's actually an ad campaign for Myntra.

What Is CPR And How To Perform It Correctly

๐Ÿ”– Further, a video of an IAS officer, Yash Pal Garg performing CPR on a person was shared widely on social media. Many people pointed out that the way Garg performed CPR was not correct. BOOM reached out to a doctor to find out how to perform CPR correctly.

๐Ÿ”– Social media is rife with videos showing Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg being held by German police as photographers come and take pictures, with the claim that it shows her recent detention by the German police being staged as a publicity stunt.

๐Ÿ”– Meanwhile, posts on Twitter and Facebook claiming Sachin Tendulkar announced his daughter Sara's engagement with Shubman Gill are going viral.

BOOM's Hazel Gandhi found that the post that first made this claim did so in a satirical manner, and the claims are false.
