❎ Misinformation This Week

πŸ”– This week, we published 17 fact-checks and found that false claims were predominantly positive in nature, with 41% of the claims framing their target in a positive manner. Negative claims accounted for 35% of the claims, while 24% had a neutral tone.

  • Political claims rank on top: accounting to 24% of the fact-checks.

πŸ…±οΈ Annual Report 2022

πŸ”– We published 1,135 fact-checks in 2022, in English, Hindi and Bangla, between 2 January and 30 December. Each of these fact-checks dealt with a unique false claim. Archis Chowdhury and Debraj Sarkar analysed each of them and found that Muslims were the most targeted religious group of false claims last year, followed by Hindus.

  • Which political party was targeted the most?

  • The 2022 misinformation factory targeted several politicians, but who ranks at the top?

πŸ’― Paani Puris In 5 Minutes: What It Takes To Be An Indian Mukbanger

πŸ”– South Korea's trend of eating large meals on camera has found takers in India. The costs, though, are huge β€” affecting the creators' physical and mental health.

"You always have to push yourself to eat more than the others. I saw the Jolo chip challenge; people were eating two packets, I ended up eating three," 28-year-old Chandu Naresh who started out his journey into Mukbang from Nagla Jai, a village near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, recalled adding that the spices burnt his cheek, lip and tongue. "I drank ghee after that to deal with the spice and the stomach burn," he said.

Prachi Sibal spoke to eight Indian Mukbang creators to piece together their journey into the world of food challengesβ€” a competitive eating sport for Internet views that can lead to several health challengesβ€” to understand why and how they do it.

πŸ”– This week, filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri claimed that his movie The Kashmir Files has been shortlisted by the Academy Awards for the 2022 Oscars, a claim that was amplified by several Indian news outlets.

But, has it been shortlisted? BOOM's Swasti Chatterjee found that the film has qualified for the Oscars along with 300 other films. The qualification does not confirm a nomination at the Oscars. The Academy Award nominations will be announced later this month on 24 January.

πŸ”– A viral message on social media, claiming that the title of 'Mahatma' was given to Mahatma Gandhi by the British, is false. This message accompanies a letter, purportedly by the British from 1938, that directs all references to Gandhi be made as 'Mahatma Gandhi'.
