⏪ 2022 Recap: Of Headlines, Misinformation, SC Orders

Hi

🥶 It's freezing cold here in Delhi as we look forward to the new year.

In this edition, we look back at

2022: The year that was.

From me, Divya Chandra & the team, here's wishing all of you a very happy and prosperous new year! 🥳

On that cheerful note, 🙏 please spare 2 minutes of your precious time to share your feedback! Take our year-end survey to help us understand why you choose to read BOOM and what we can do better.

🪧 The Year of #Boycott

🔖 Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Pathaan,' Aamir Khan's 'Lal Singh Chaddha' and Ranbir Kapoor's 'Brahmastra: Part One Shiva' have something in common— boycott calls.2022 was the year when Indian films and documentaries were recognised on the global stage. It was also the year when Indians wanted to boycott specific Bollywood films, largely because they didn't fit the religious standards of the hashtag Internet brigade. BOOM debunked several pieces of misinformation about these three movies that went viral on social media in the run-up to their release. Here's a rewind.

🚩 The Year of Media [Mis]Reporting

🔖 The year 2022 was a busy one for most media outlets around the world. While some news outlets remained busy with ground reporting and breaking news, we also saw the bar on misreporting being raised by other mainstream outlets.

BOOM did 76 unique fact-checks on misreporting or false reporting by news channels, websites and wire agencies between 1 January to 31 December. This number more than doubled since 2021, when we fact-checked the media 27 times.

Which media house misreported the most? Find out in this report by BOOM.

What Made Headlines in 2022?

🔖 The year 2022 began with the hope of overcoming Covid, even as several Indian states went under lockdown because of the Omicron wave.

The year started with Hijab protests in Karnataka in January, while tensions flared up over former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma's derogatory remarks over Prophet Mohammed during a TV debate in May.

As the year comes to an end, here's a look at the top five news events of 2022.

⚖️ Important Supreme Court Verdicts

🔖 With three different chief justices, the SC passed noteworthy orders including issuing guidelines for bail to long-term undertrials, interpretation of the Hindu Succession Act that held a daughter's right to inherit a share of her father's self-acquired property, expanding the scope of a 'vulnerable witness', and reminding the Centre to direct states from charging people with Section 66A of the Information and Technology Act, 2000 which has been struck down.

BOOM recaps the important and noteworthy verdicts passed this year.

🪙 What Was It Like For Crypto?

🔖 In 2021, cryptocurrency millionaires were on the covers of magazines for all the right reasons.

In 2022, they're on the cover of magazines for all the wrong reasons, joining those who realise that magazine covers are slippery slopes to doom.

The state of the global crypto ecosystem in 2022 has juxtapositioned itself with its state in 2021 all too perfectly.

Last year, it was thriving, as around 13 months ago, most cryptocurrencies saw their lifetime highs. Today, the prices of most benchmark cryptocurrencies are trading at prices around a third of that.
