UPSC aspirants are using social media to debunk the narrative of 'romanticising struggle' by highlighting the harsh realities and systemic issues they face. Read on!

Here’s a quick guide for all of you to verify information on social media. Be it on X, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram in the form of text/ image/ video—anything anywhere.

Image Verification

-Reverse image searches on Google/ Yandex/ TinEye/ Bing

-It can also be done on your mobile phone using Google Lens.

Video Verification

-Install InVid WeVerify Plugin extension to your Chrome browsers and break the video into several keyframes and then perform a reverse image search.

Archiving

-Archive/save online links or search for already archived links on archive.is/ Wayback machine/ ghost archive.

Advanced searches

-Perform extensive localised and customised search using Facebook filters, Twitter advanced search, Google advanced search for image/ video/ text.

P.S: While these tools are quite helpful in verifying online information, do make use of your observational skills and logical reasoning.

🔖 What happened: The deaths of three students trapped in Rau's IAS Study Circle basement has prompted widespread protests and calls for justice. Protests outside the coaching institutes in Delhi's Old Rajendra Nagar are underway, with more than 500 students participating each day.

Social media use case: Using hashtags like #WeDemandJustice and #StudentsUnderAttack, 24-year-old UPSC aspirant Mohammad Musharraf has been actively sharing photos and videos of the protesting students, surrounded by the high-rise coaching centres and their billboards.

Motivation, reality et al: Similarly, Avesh Khan, who has lived in the area for over an year told Decode’s Hera Rizwan, “We see viral reels of so-called celebrity teachers who make us believe there is no success without struggle. They promote the idea that overcoming the system’s hurdles will ultimately be rewarded when the aspirant cracks the exam.” He blames these 'motivational' reels on social media for luring aspirants towards their dream job without making them aware of the ground reality.
