Media Outlets Fall For CGI Video Showing Statue Of Virat Kohli At Times Square

In the headlines: Media outlets including News18 and The Indian Express carried a video of Virat Kohli's statue at Times Square and reported it as a real incident.

The fact: BOOM’s Hazel Gandhi found that the video has been created using CGI (computer generated imagery) as part of an advertisement for Duroflex, a mattress company represented by Kohli.

Here’s how we found:

  • Taking a cue from the Duroflex ads around Virat Kohli in the viral video, we ran a keyword search on Google using 'Virat Kohli Duroflex Times Square statue'.

  • This led us to the same video shared on Duroflex's YouTube channel on 23 June 2024. We noticed the word 'CGI' mentioned in the video's title.

  • The same video was also shared on Duroflex's Instagram page with a disclaimer that the clip was a "CGI Video" and a hashtag that read #cgianimation.

Queer Indians Confront Online Hate While Tech Platforms Stay Indifferent

πŸ”– Online hate & trolling: When Yash Sharma, 25, and his mother attended the annual pride parade in Delhi in2022, the photos went viral. Sharma was used to facing hate online, but this time, the trolls targeted his mother too.

β€œIt’s odd and worrying, people like my mother have accepted their queer children, why should they face such harassment?” the queer-rights activist and founder of Official Humans of Queer told Jaishree Kumar.

The irony: When it comes to online harassment and bullying that the LGBTQ community faces on social media platforms, there has been little done by Meta or any other tech companies.
